Sciennes Primary School is in a grand Victorian building (old postcard) south of The Meadows. It has been a pioneering Safe Routes to School school since 1997 (some history – “Safe routes activity at Sciennes is the most extensive of any school in Edinburgh. This is due to a happy mix of motivated parents, enthusiastic staff, keen children and a supportive Head Teacher.”).
Achievements include covered bike racks, the chicane outside the school, traffic calming in Melville Terrace, the redesigned junction at West Savile Terrace and Mayfield Road (better for pedestrians) and the 20MPH zone around the school.
The school is at the north end of its catchment area which covers parts of Sciennes, Marchmont, Grange and South Side. It is in the new Southside/Newington Ward (map). It has four councillors (from four different parties).
It is one of the few schools in Edinburgh that has Cycle Training (what used to be known as Cycling Proficiency) in school time. It is one of the very few schools that trains almost all children (up to 90) each year.
